On Saturday, November 20th, 2010, members of the Greek Community at the University of New Mexico (UNM) came together to participate in the 2010 Sigma Chi Fight Night held at the UNM Johnson Center to raise money for the fight against breast cancer with Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the global leader of the breast cancer movement – having invested nearly $1.5 billion since its inception in 1982.
Competing in USA Boxing sanctioned matches – fraternity and sorority members fought in 3 – 2 minute round boxing matches in front of a crowd of over 750 spectators in what was described as a night of fierce competition with displays of powerful punching. When it was all said and done, after 12 tough fought boxing matches, several things were clear; the fighters entertained, the spectators went home with a night to remember, and the fight against breast cancer was the true winner of the night - with over $20,000 raised as a result of the 2010 Sigma Chi Fight Night.
But Temple 6 would like this opportunity to recognize one of the fighters who participated in this year’s charity event - Timothy Serrano, member of Phi Gamma Delta, Alpha Nu Chapter at the University of New Mexico - and a member of Temple Lodge 6. Bro. Serrano fought in the 133 pound Light Welterweight Division against John Ortega of the Omega Delta Phi, Alpha Eta Chapter, and won his match by decision (points).
Bro. Serrano trained very hard for this event to represent with dignity the fraternities of which he is a member, but also to entertain the crowd in support of a very important charitable cause.
Brother Tim Serrano (White Top/Black Trunks)
Congratulations Bro. Serrano for your hard fought victory at the 2010 Sigma Chi Fight Night, and congratulations to all the members of the UNM Greek Community who participated in this wonderful charity event.
