2011 Officer Installation - Temple 6

The Installation of Lodge Officers Ceremony for Temple Lodge No. 6 was held on Monday, December 27th, 2010 before a large audience of Brethren, family, and friends who came together from around New Mexico to celebrate this event. Lodge was opened in form one last time by WB Chris Larsen before going to refreshment for preparation for the installation of 2011 Lodge Officers.

The installation of elected and appointed officers (13 in all) was a wonderful event to see. After our newly installed officers were at their proper places and stations; WB Bill Sadler offered introductions of visiting Brethren and remarks as our newly installed Worshipful Master. WB Sadler then presented gifts of appreciation to the 2011 Installation Team for their efforts during this special event. The Installation Ceremony ended with a presentation of the Past Master (PM) Apron to WB Chris Larsen by RWB Josh Lightle, who was part of the officer line when WB Larsen was first made an officer in Temple 6.

The presentation of the PM Apron to the outgoing Master is a long standing tradition among Past Masters of Temple Lodge 6.

2010 Sigma Chi Fight Night!

Brethren,

On Saturday, November 20th, 2010, members of the Greek Community at the University of New Mexico (UNM) came together to participate in the 2010 Sigma Chi Fight Night held at the UNM Johnson Center to raise money for the fight against breast cancer with Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the global leader of the breast cancer movement – having invested nearly $1.5 billion since its inception in 1982.

Competing in USA Boxing sanctioned matches – fraternity and sorority members fought in 3 – 2 minute round boxing matches in front of a crowd of over 750 spectators in what was described as a night of fierce competition with displays of powerful punching. When it was all said and done, after 12 tough fought boxing matches, several things were clear; the fighters entertained, the spectators went home with a night to remember, and the fight against breast cancer was the true winner of the night - with over $20,000 raised as a result of the 2010 Sigma Chi Fight Night.

But Temple 6 would like this opportunity to recognize one of the fighters who participated in this year’s charity event - Timothy Serrano, member of Phi Gamma Delta, Alpha Nu Chapter at the University of New Mexico - and a member of Temple Lodge 6. Bro. Serrano fought in the 133 pound Light Welterweight Division against John Ortega of the Omega Delta Phi, Alpha Eta Chapter, and won his match by decision (points).

Bro. Serrano trained very hard for this event to represent with dignity the fraternities of which he is a member, but also to entertain the crowd in support of a very important charitable cause.

Brother Tim Serrano (White Top/Black Trunks)

Congratulations Bro. Serrano for your hard fought victory at the 2010 Sigma Chi Fight Night, and congratulations to all the members of the UNM Greek Community who participated in this wonderful charity event.

Christmas Day!

December 25 - Christmas Day - is both a sacred religious holiday and a worldwide cultural and commercial phenomenon. For two millennia, people around the world have been observing it with traditions and practices that are both religious and secular in nature. Popular customs include exchanging gifts, decorating Christmas trees, attending church, sharing meals with family and friends and, of course, waiting for Santa Claus to arrive.

But did you know:

In the early 17th century, a wave of religious reform changed the way Christmas was celebrated in Europe. When Oliver Cromwell and his Puritan forces took over England in 1645, they vowed to rid England of decadence and, as part of their effort, cancelled Christmas. By popular demand, Charles II was restored to the throne and, with him, came the return of the popular holiday.

The pilgrims, English separatists that came to America in 1620, were even more orthodox in their Puritan beliefs than Cromwell. As a result, Christmas was not a holiday in early America. From 1659 to 1681, the celebration of Christmas was actually outlawed in Boston. Anyone exhibiting the Christmas spirit was fined five shillings.

By contrast, in the Jamestown Settlement, Captain John Smith reported that Christmas was enjoyed by all and passed without incident.

After the American Revolution, English customs fell out of favor, including Christmas. In fact, Congress was in session on December 25, 1789, the first Christmas under America's new constitution. Christmas wasn't declared a federal holiday until June 26, 1870.
